Program Overview

Does Dr. Mehta prescribe medications for functional medicine?

NO. She does NOT prescribe prescription medications or controlled substances. Your prescribing practitioner will manage prescriptions. Dr. Mehta uses nutrition, herbs, supplements, stress management and sleep management techniques, and other lifestyle changes to deal with the underlying cause(s) of dysfunction(s) of the body.

These lifestyle changes may promote optimal function and health helping you work with your prescriber (NOT Dr. Mehta) to lower the dose or titrate off your prescriptions. Many patients find mood, blood sugar, digestive, and pain relief, etc. as their body heals and they don’t need as strong a dose of some medications or may eventually stop certain medications under supervision and monitoring of a prescribing practitioner.

What is Functional Medicine? How does it help you?

Functional Medicine, rather than targeting individual symptoms, focuses on the optimal functioning of the entire body and its organs, and makes connections between the body systems ignored by allopathic medicine, since there is no profit or financial incentive to improve body functioning.

FM addresses the underlying root causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach in while understanding the conditions and history in which the discomfort manifested.

Genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors all have a direct influence of long-term health and chronic health issues and we address these along with  biochemical individuality and genetic uniqueness.

Traditional medicine gives a pill or surgery for a chronic condition in cookbook type format with not much customization which in most cases doesn’t improve the quality of life unless it was an anatomical issue.

Functional medicine would improve function so the patient is less likely to need medication or surgery, in some cases avoiding it, in other cases a lesser dose or surgery would be required.

Functional medicine may prevent or reduce the risk of certain chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, weight gain (obesity), that have a strong lifestyle component because individual nutrition, sleep, stress management, and supplements are customized and play a large role in these inflammatory conditions.

What is Dr. Mehta’s Method?

Dr. Mehta’s Method is a functional medicine lab based health approach focused on addressing five common conditions – weight gain, fatigue, mood, hormone,  and digestive issues – through restoring the 3 main body systems: hormones, digestion and detoxification.

How is Dr. Mehta’s method different from other practitioners?

Dr. Mehta’s Method addresses the 5 most chronic symptoms of weight gain, fatigue, depression, hormone imbalances and digestive problems that are typically misunderstood/misdiagnosed by conventional medicine practitioners who attempt to address the symptoms, not the root cause/damaged system.

Dr. Mehta’s Method is a lab-based natural health protocol that tests and identifies the dysfunction of the 3 core main body systems. Typically these 3 main systems have become compromised long BEFORE the symptoms appeared. The lab tests are used to determine the required natural support needed to rebalance your body back to its normal state.

How long does it take to get results?

Results vary by each person. Some people feel dramatic improvement within the first week, most see different levels of improvement in 3-6 months; those who have been ill for years could take longer. Our standard programs are for a minimum of 3-6 months. Most gut and detox programs are 3 months, and sometimes have to be repeated (with breaks) depending on the severity of the condition. Remember, your body didn’t fail overnight. Years of stress, poor nutrition, exposure to toxins – takes its toll and it takes a proper amount of time to restore.

Consultation Process

What is the best way to schedule an appointment with Dr. Mehta?

1) Please email office@healthbw.com to check that Dr. Mehta is accepting new patients or put on the wait-list (varies from 2 weeks to 2 months).

The fastest and easiest way to schedule an appointment is by using our online scheduler: Click Here to Make an Appointment The earliest available appointments will always be posted online first.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

We encourage clients to book 2 weeks in advance. Depending on the time of the year, we can usually schedule a new patient or lab results appointment within 1-2 weeks of the requested time.

What is included with the Case Review consultation?

The clinician will review the most recent labs (if available) of blood, stool, urine, saliva, etc. in addition to 25+ pages of detailed patient forms covering diet, sleep, stress, health history, etc. Each person will receive educational material and guides on health and nutrition and  to assist in your health journey. These may include recipes, meal plans, etc.

How many labs are required per person?

The number of labs recommended will depend on your individual situation including the number of issues you struggle with and the length of time you have been experiencing them, but the range is 1-6 lab tests – most are stool, saliva, or urine.
The patients with the most success have done the recommended stool test, urine hormone test, advanced blood chemistry, and urine organic acids test and environmental toxins test at the minimum.

Do I have to take all the tests recommended at once?

The number of labs recommended will depend on your individual situation including the number of issues you struggle with and the length of time you have been experiencing them, but the range is 1-4 lab tests.

How long does it take to get the lab results?

The results of your lab test(s) will be sent to Dr. Mehta 1-6 weeks after mailing your specimens to the lab. After evaluation we will contact you to schedule a follow up appointment to review your results with Dr. Mehta and she will make recommendations.

Dr. Mehta does all lab review sessions and will design your protocol during your consultation.

Dr. Mehta does all lab review sessions and will design your program during your lab results consultation.

Can I order my own test kits through the laboratories or can my regular doctor order the lab tests for me?

Dr. Mehta and Beyond Wellness use specific reputable labs recommended and used by thousands of certified functional and integrative healthcare practitioner. These labs often exclusively offer functional medicine tests. Beyond Wellness is researching and looking for better, precise, accurate, and cost-effective labs that are best able to help in guiding patients to a better quality of life. Traditional labs and local hospital based labs are NOT helpful for most types of highly specialized labs. Conventional medicine offers NO training or education on these specialized labs so typically those practitioners are unaware and DON’T know how to interpret them without functional medicine certification like Dr. Mehta.

If you order functional medicine tests through another provider you will be charged $25-$100 lab interpretation fee per lab (depending on complexity) for Dr. Mehta to review these results.

What laboratories does Dr. Mehta use? And why?

The accuracy of your lab findings and the quality of the professionals performing the lab tests is often a major key to you uncovering what’s going on. Quality is not equal across all lab companies. Many times we see “normal” test results from regular lab companies and our lab tests find many “functional” problems.

The lab companies used by Dr. Mehta have high testing standards and consistent lab results year after year. These are not replacements for regular medical tests, these tests are only used to detect “functional” issues rather than medical problems and aren’t meant to diagnose or recommend protocols for diseases. We are attempting to detect problems with the functioning of organ systems prior to the onset of a disease.

What types of lab tests are needed to guide the protocols, diet, supplements, and lifestyle changes?

Depending on the lab, the samples maybe blood, saliva, urine and/or stool. Many tests are completed by the client through easy test kits that are self-administered in the comfort, privacy, convenience of your own home. Bloodwork may be done through blood spot testing, select blood draw centers and/or mobile phlebotomists.

The exact labs vary with your situation but typical include following (can be done at the pace you desire):
1) Comprehensive blood chemistry – screening for several types of anemia, infections, insulin resistance, thyroid panel, adrenal and hormonal issues, some vitamins and minerals

3) Advanced stool tests – parasites, fungal overgrowth, dysbiosis, deficiency of beneficial bacteria, intestinal inflammation, problems metabolizing carbohydrates and/or fats, infections

4) Urine Organic Acid screens – small intestinal bacterial overgrowth SIBO, fungal overgrowth, methylation issues, detox capacity, oxidative stress, neurotransmitter metabolism, problems metabolizing carbohydrates and/or fats, vitamin and mineral status

5) urine hormone lab – adrenal and sex hormone status

Advanced may later be ordered if history suggests it and you are not improving enough with the testing above
*1) advanced environmental toxins such as heavy metals, mold, pesticides, herbacides, etc
* 2) Specialty blood tests – autoimmune, gluten, dairy and other food sensitivities, advanced lipid cholesterol panels

How long are the consultations?

Initial new patient consultations are 60 minutes

Follow up lab result consultations can be scheduled for 30 min. (if you have 1-2 tests) or 45 min. (if you have 2-4 tests) sessions.
Existing client follow up consultations can be scheduled for 30, 45 or 60 minutes.

Can I purchase supplements other than from Dr. Mehta?

Dr. Mehta recommends high quality supplements which have been formulated to achieve the best results in the appropriate biological forms and doses. These supplement companies follow FDA cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practices) and independently test for allergens and purity. Freshly manufactured supplements are used not some returned old stock sitting in warm warehouse for months or years which can be the case for some online retailers.
If you want to do your own research on different supplements, we welcome you to do so but we do not provide any other recommendations nor advise on other specific blends or brands.
If you purchase other supplements from other manufacturers, please research carefully. Not all ingredients are equal. Some products sit in warm warehouses for long, have already expired, have a short expiration date, or may be adulterated.

Does Dr. Mehta offer Phone, Video, or in-person consultations?

Due to some sensitive patients Dr. Mehta counsels – patients sensitive to perfumes, fragrances, artificial scents, chemicals, toxins, etc. and the difficulty finding real estate space free of them she is currently NOT accepting any new in-person consultations requests.

We find that time traveling to appointments can create unnecessary stress, missed/late appointments, and disruptive to both patient and clinician. This is especially true during bad weather.

IF you want to read more about about 30% of the population has a reaction to artificial scents see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfume_intolerance

Skype is NOT HIPAA privacy compliant and therefore NOT used.
The office is reviewing HIPAA compliant video programs and we hope to use them in the near future.

Cost / Insurance

What are the fees for consults?

New Patient Case Review: $395 (50-60 minutes of phone consult). Includes reviewing 20+ pages of forms and most recents labs (past year) and formulating a personalized plan for the patient.
Follow Up Calls (Existing Patients only)
60 min: $349
45 min: $263
30 min: $175

There is NO insurance that covers the time, effort, investigation, and personalization that Beyond Wellness offers. Many people visit weekly or several times a week chiropractors, personal trainers, massage therapists, and/or acupuncturists charging $125-$200 per hour and can often give some relief.  However, often this doesn’t address the root causes of pain, inflammation and discomfort. As the body heals with functional medicine, often the need and frequency for these services drops significantly resulting in cost-saving. A master electrician or master plumber can charge easily $200/hr or more so you should value your health even more.

Functional medicine patients often find their productivity at work and relationships at home improve when their health improves. Functional medicine may seem expensive but chronic sickness and dysfunction is often costlier because of loss of productivity at work and home. Sickness creates a lot of stress in relationships. Most patients are working people who want to become healthier. How much patients may spend depends on the complexity of the dysfunction(s), lab test(s) required, and combination of supplements needed during treatment.

The analogy of functional medicine: Functional medicine is like taking the pebbles out of your shoe so your foot doesn’t hurt anymore – improving pain and normalizing inflammation. Traditional medicine wants to give a bandage (often in the forms of surgery and medication) without even acknowledging, looking for, or removing the pebbles in the shoe.

Consultation are typically recommended every 4-5 weeks to ensure optimal compliance and support is given but as your quality of life improves they can be decreased to once every quarter, 6 months, or yearly for maintenance.

How much do to the lab tests cost?

After you fill out all the patient forms Dr. Mehta will advise which labs (if any) will be most helpful at your Case Review. We can work as slowly or quickly as you need depending on your budget and health. Some patients do many labs at once because that is more convenient for them and others will space them out over 6-12 months. For most lab tests the costs range from $200-1200 per kit/lab panel and you may start a program by ordering a single test (although bundled tests are often discounted). These costs include NON-REFUNDABLE admin $25 per kit/lab panel + $25-100/lab interpretation fee (depending on complexity of labs), shipping of the kit to your home, and return shipping back to the lab. Some labs may require separate blood draw charges or charge extra for expedited shipping to YOUR address. Lab results can take 1-6 weeks depending on the lab.

It depends on how many test kits are recommended (typically 1-4) but we always recommend that if there are any budgetary concerns, clients start with their first test.

Body System 1 Test (Hormone System): Range between $100-$600.

Body System 2 Test (Digestion & Infections): $400-700

Body System 3 Test (Detox, Nutrients & Toxicity): $300-$1200

Test recommendations are specifically recommended at the time of new patient consult and follow consults. Our recommendations are based on getting the optimal information depending on what the patient is dealing with health-wise.

All of our recommendations can be adjusted and consolidated to help meet the budget of the patient. Doing something is always better than nothing, creating a program where at least 1 test can be taken is a great starting point.

How much do the wellness programs cost after lab work?

Most patients are working people who want to become healthier. The price depends on the complexity of the dysfunction(s), lab test(s) required, and combination of nutraceuticals and botanicals needed during treatment. We do everything possible to make Functional Medicine affordable. Patients often find their productivity at work and relationships at home improve when their health improves. Functional medicine may seem expensive but chronic sickness and dysfunction is often costlier because of loss of productivity at work and home. Sickness creates a lot of stress in relationships.

What is the average cost I will incur for my initial new patient consult plus test kits?

It depends on how many and which labs are recommended (typically 1-6) but we recommend if there are any budgetary concerns, clients begin with one lab. Some bundled labs are discounted.

Does my new Case Review fee include follow ups, test kits and supplements?

The Case Review is an assessment of your health and recommendations on what tests and/or supplements are required to understand and investigate the state of your body systems. The new patient Case Review fee does NOT include any follow ups, test kits or supplements. After the Case Review, you will be offered extensive wellness resources including handouts and electronic resources to help you in your journey to better health .

What types of payment does Dr. Mehta accept?

Methods of payment are: Visa, MasterCard, HSA, Flex-savings, Discover or debit card.

How much time do I have to cancel or change a scheduled consultation?

If you are unable to keep your scheduled follow-up appointment, you must notify our office a minimum of 72 hours before your scheduled time or you may be charged for that appointment.

If waiting for lab test results – we recommend reserving follow-up appointments about 2 weeks after results are sent to the practitioner to give time for the clinician to review them. This time frame is typically 3-6 weeks after the lab specimen is collected – ask the lab for further details as lab processing times vary and may change.

New Patient Case Review 50-55 minute appointments have a ONE week cancellation or rescheduling policy as it usually involves several hours of preparation to review the 20+ pages of forms in addition to the most recent labs submitted.

This also allows enough time to fill this slot with another patient. Any cancellation or rescheduling change less then 1 week prior to the Case Review appointment will be charged the full case review fee and rescheduling will be at the hourly rate.

Does Health Beyond Wellness take insurance, CareCredit, MassHealth, Medicaid, Medicare, or payment plans?

Insurance companies DON’T reimburse for the quality of time to investigate your history, health, labs, supplements, and lifestyle. Beyond Wellness does NOT contract with any healthcare plan or insurance plan. CareCredit, Medicare, Medicaid, federal government plans, state government plans, payment plans and insurance are NOT accepted by Health Beyond Wellness.

Most Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Spending Accounts (HSA) funds can be used to pay for care at Health Beyond Wellness such as labs, supplements, and consults. We encourage all patients to investigate, in advance, the requirements governing their specific HSA/FSA plans.

We do NOT bill insurance companies; each individual must find out on their own whether their insurance plan provides reimbursement for consultations, supplements and lab tests.

We can provide CPT codes and ICD 10 codes on a superbill that can be submitted to insurance for for possible reimbursement after the office has received the payment for services and products due. Please call customer service on the back of your card to receive instructions how to submit a claim. Beyond Wellness is NOT responsible for any insurance claims that fail to get coverage or discount. Any in-depth paperwork will be billed at the practitioner’s hourly rate.

Most labs such as stool, urine, saliva, and specialty bloodwork are NOT covered since functional medicine DOESN’T lobby insurance companies for coverage and the insurance companies are slow to accept the latest testing. Since functional medicine is considered elective and preventative by the insurance industry they do NOT cover it.

We do everything possible to make Functional Medicine affordable and many patients are normal working people who want to improve their health and function.

Our patients tell us the value of care they receive at Health Beyond Wellness far exceeds the costs involved. Investing in your health, family, and future can be a priceless investment.

According to recent American Medical Association (AMA) surveys,  insurance based practitioners spend 20 hours on average weekly on insurance administrative tasks and 3 weeks per year dealing with insurance,  in addition to patient care. At Health Beyond Wellness we focus instead to spend those hours weekly on keeping up to date with the latest health research and focusing on patient care.

How can the office help with getting reimbursements for consultations and/or test kits?

Per your request, we will provide a superbill to you that lists CPT and diagnosis codes that you may submit to your insurance company. Our superbills provide the codes for consultations and lab tests. Most insurance companies will not reimburse for supplements. Please note that we cannot guarantee reimbursement. This will depend on your individual plan.

Does Dr. Mehta offer any kind of discounts for students/elderly?

There are no discounts available at this time.

Does she offer any discount if more than one family member will be signing up to become a patient?

There are no family discounts; however, for couples we can offer joint consultations of 1 hour to cover both people. Please contact the office for more details.

Protocols

What supplements are used to support adrenal dysfunction?

Depending on your lab results and symptoms, Dr. Mehta may recommend combination of dietary changes, sleep changes, stress reductions recommendations, and supplements to help support your adrenals.

What are DHEA, pregnenolone, progesterone, licorice?

These are natural, plant based products that support and balance the adrenal glands and are combined into customized wellness plans based on individual lab results.

Does Dr. Mehta use bio-identical hormones?

It depends on the patient and their concerns. The purpose of bio-identical hormones is to mimic the body’s natural reproduction of its own hormones and we only use products that naturally occur in the body in minimal amounts for the shortest time as your body heals. In some situations herbal non-hormonal support may be used for those who are NOT candidates for bio-identical hormones.

How long are the programs that Dr. Mehta recommends?

Results vary by each person. Some people feel dramatic improvement within the first month, others take longer. Remember, your body didn’t fail overnight. Years of poor lifestyle and stress takes its toll and it takes a proper amount of time to restore.

Everyone is different in regard to healing. Some can start to feel better in days while others take years depending on the level of damage and what our investigation uncovers. Significant improvement typically happens in 3-6 months. A few who don’t improve as fast as they should or stagnate are due to ANY combo of the following reasons:
lack of emotional support
NOT doing the labs to investigate why there are still issues
NOT giving all the health information requested on forms
NOT trying the lifestyle changes such as diet, supplements, etc.
NOT tracking progress in a journal, diary or calendar – many patients forget how poorly they felt prior to making changes

Most of my patients have been through 5 or more other practitioners trying different approaches before consulting with Beyond Wellness and so are motivated to implement the recommendations.

Programs typically range anywhere from 3-6 months depending on the degree and complexity of your health condition. Programs may sometimes have to be repeated with breaks depending on the severity of the conditions. Generally the more chronic the condition and the greater the damage, the more time is required for healing and repair.

How often should I retest?

It is recommended that a client retest certain labs  2-4 weeks after a protocol (or several protocols) to measure improvement and adjust protocols if needed. Once a client has achieved their desired health results, we recommend some basic annual testing to ensure your body systems continue functioning at their optimum.

Background / Communication

Is Dr. Mehta an MD?

Dr. Mehta is NOT a medical doctor and does NOT prescribe medication for functional medicine patients. She does NOT service medical emergencies, take call, diagnose, or issue protocols for any specific diseases. The first two years of her doctorate education includes General Anatomy and Physiology (including cadaver lab), Biochemistry, Microbiology (with lab), Immunology, Histology (with lab), Neuroanatomy, and General Pharmacology similar to the first 2 years of coursework that an Medical Doctor (MD), Osteopathic Doctor (DO), DDS (Dentist), etc. would cover. The last 2 years are focused on clinical care and ocular health.

She is Functional Medicine Practitioner and Doctor of Optometry.  Her postgraduate education and training includes Functional Medicine and Clinical Nutrition.

She does NOT practice medicine, does NOT diagnose or treat medical conditions or disease.  Dr. Mehta focuses on helping you promote and improve optimal health and function. Her services do NOT replace or substitute those of a primary care provider but rather to complement your health care team. It is best to consider her a consultant in your wellness team (which might include others such as yoga teacher, massage therapist, physical therapist, acupuncturist, etc.)

If you have a medical emergency, you must contact your local emergency room and/or primary care provider. You are expected to have a primary care practitioner for prescriptions, screenings, etc.

Can I email Dr. Mehta with any questions/concerns?

Dr. Mehta is happy to answer quick questions (answerable in a few sentences) via email about recommendations, a protocol or concerns. If it is a complex question which requires further back and forth communication, you will need to schedule a consult.

Please read this  policy, which pertains to all patient inquiries and requests sent through email:

Due to the increasing number of electronic communications, and in order for you to receive a response in a timely manner, please limit your messages to:

  • questions about a supplement, or diagnostic test recommended by a clinician;
  • requests to refill a supplement;
  • possible side effects of a program;
  • responses to a question from a clinician; or,
  • notes concerning scheduling, canceling, or changing an appointment

Your question should be brief, concise, and ideally be answerable with a ‘yes’ or ‘no.’

If your questions or concerns are beyond the scope described above, and/or require more time and attention, you will be asked to schedule a follow-up appointment.

How quickly should expect I expect an answer to a question?

Depending on the situation and the urgency it may be 2-5 business days. Please contact the Lab directly for lab questions as protocols and requirements can change (ie fasting, discontinuing certain supplements etc.)especially with shipping holidays and potential shipping strikes. If the answer requires more then a few sentences or a more complex answer you will be asked to book a minimum 30 minute appointment. Simple questions may be answered via email.

What is Dr. Mehta’s approach?

Dr. Mehta’s Method addresses the 3 most common and chronic issues of poor health – hormonal dysfunction (adrenal, blood sugar, etc.), detox, and gut dysfunction using a systems based approach.

These dysfunctions often manifest as weight gain, fatigue, mood issues, hormone imbalances and digestive problems (constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating), skin issues (acne, psoriasis, eczema etc.) pain that are typically misunderstood/misdiagnosed by conventional medicine practitioners who attempt to address the symptoms, not the root cause/damaged system(s).

Dr. Mehta’s Method is an evidence and lab-based natural health protocol that tests and identifies the dysfunction of these 3 core main body systems. Typically these 3 main systems have become compromised long BEFORE the symptoms appeared. The lab tests are used to determine the required natural support needed to rebalance your body back to health.

Dr. Mehta is a compassionate practitioner. She is deeply passionate about empowering people to recover their health and guiding them to achieving Health Beyond Wellness! She sought functional medicine as a career after her own complex health challenges. Functional medicine dramatically changed her life and her outlook in an amazing way. Dr. Mehta would like now to share this knowledge with others who could benefit from the same approach. In working with many patients of diverse backgrounds, she practices kindness and empathy. Please see our testimonial page of our website for feedback from patients.

What should I do if I am struggling sticking to my protocol?

We understand prioritizing a wellness plan requires major life changes.

Briefly write a few words in a diary, scheduler, or journal describing how you feel as you respond to dietary and supplement changes.

Herx (Herxheimer Reactions) may result from weight loss and the body or microbes releasing toxins from heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, biotoxins, and infections (die off from bacteria, parasites, fungi, tick illness like Lyme etc.) etc. You may feel mild headache, joint pain, body aches, groggy, and/or fatigue.Drink plenty of water and gently titrate up or down supplements as needed and if severe stop the product triggering it and schedule a phone consult to discuss alternatives.

There are 4 steps that can help:

  1. start one supplement at a time and record the day and time in journal, appointment book, or calendar
  2. Keep  a health journal or diary allows one to stay on track and also shows the progression that we often forget when we need a little inspiration. You can also track if a supplement or food is giving you discomfort.
  3. Titrate the dose of a supplement starting with 1/4 then 1/2 then 3/4 then finally the full dose may work over a period of time. In rare cases –  supplements may need to be changed to every other day and then eventually built up to a daily dose.
  4. If you still feel considerable discomfort with a supplement or program – Please email the office so we can suggest some alternatives. For more detailed discussion, please schedule a phone consult.
